14.07.2017 - Bastille Day
Today we'll celebrate and mourn Bastille Day. Bastille Day is an Anglicized term for la Fete Nationale which is commonly and legally known as Le 14 juillet (Quatorze juillet). This year there will be a full day of memorial events to commemorate the attack on the Promenade de Anglais at the end of the Bastille Day fireworks in Nice last year.
Below are several articles and videos about Basille Day in Nice.

This afternoon the senior home behind our building had a small summer celebration with singing and dancing and food. They sing and dance there often. There was a karaoke machine and a male, and occasionally a female singer, who belted out or crooned popular oldies including Sinatra's 'My Way', Mary Hopkin's 'Those were the Days, My Friend' and some disco.
John and I always enjoy those outdoor events at the Seniors Recreation Center. In France many people go away for vacation in August and the seniors' house is closed starting in August. We always say "Bye Bye senior Frenchies - we'll see you again soon." except we may not be here too much longer as we may move to another neighborhood.

For the Fourth of July Democrats Abroad had a get together in the garden of a local church. This was the first time since we've been going to DA that we had the time and opportunity to get to know one another better.
In addition to the getting to know the usual crowd better we met Zella, a cellist and her friend Marianne who is a singer (for the Nice Opera or Orchestra). They will both be at the Bastille Day memorial. The party was great with excellent French food (of course) and lots of interesting people. We met a French historian, a linguist and an author. What an impressive group!
Next to the garden was a very serene wooded cemetery with most of the markers from the 1840's. John was entranced and took many pictures.
